The Berkshire FROUDEs in New Zealand

The descendants of this branch in New Zealand come from two second cousins, Sidney Herbert and Joseph Alfred Randall. Their ancestors on the FROUDE side come from the Fawley and Chaddleworth area in Berkshire as far back as early 1700’s.

 

Sidney Herbert FROUDE arrived in New Zealand about 1912. He was born in Fulham, London, England in 1877. He was the son of David FROUDE (1841-1908) and Eliza Jane BALL (1844-1902). At the age of 14 he became a Butcher’s Apprentice and lived in Croydon, Surrey, England. By 1911 he had become a Butcher Manager and lived at 3 Oxford Street, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.

 

He married Ellen Sarah CRAPPER in Islington, London in 1902. She was the daughter of John Charles CRAPPER (1854-1940) and Martha FROUDE (1855-1889). Martha FROUDE and David FROUDE were brother and sister, so Sidney and Ellen were first cousins.

 

Sidney first lived in at 70 Durham Street, Sydenham and worked as a Butcher. However by 1917 he was living at Umere, Karamea, West Coast, and was working as a Farm Hand. Being a Farmer didn’t appeal, and by 1925 Sidney was back working as a butcher, and now living at 82 Jervois Road, Ponsonby, Auckland. In 1926 Sidney died at Tokatoka, Northland, at the young age of 49. Nellie died in 1967 in Auckland.

 

Sidney and Ellen or Nellie as she later came to be known had 4 known children:

1. Elsie May born 1902 in Islington, London who married Henry Owen (Bart) CULLERNE in Auckland in 1934.
2. Dorothy Mabel born 1905, in Islington, London. I was told she married a JORDAN, but have been unable to find any marriage record for her. There was a daughter Annie born to Dorothy FROUDE in 1921 that may be related.
3. Barbara Nellie born 1919 in Karamea, West Coast, who married a Leo LOWE in 1956.
4. Charles Sidney born 1925 in Dargaville, Northland who married Joyce Audrey Lavia COOMBES in 1953.

 

Joseph Alfred Randall FROUDE arrived in New Zealand shortly after the end of World War I. Joseph was the son of William Thomas Allen FROUDE (1864-1934) and Mary Elizabeth RANDALL (1863-1948).

Joseph was born in 1901 at Watford, Hertfordshire, and by 1922 was living in New Zealand with his sister Ella Mary at 62 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland. Ella Mary went back to England but came back again in 1926. In 1922 Joseph worked as a Dairyman. By 1928 he had moved to Ocean View Road, Northcote, Auckland and was working as a Contractor.

He married Dorothea Elizabeth PAWSEY (the daughter of James PAWSEY and Honoria Mary Theresa BARRY) in 1928.

The rest of his life Joseph worked as a Greengrocer or shop keeper. Both he and Dorothea died in 1969, just four months apart.

Joseph and Dorothea had two sons Dexter Allen in 1929 and John Randall (Jack) in 1930.
