They were the third FROUDE family to arrive in New Zealand, David and Robert FROUDE being the heads of the first and second families. John was the oldest son of Thomas FROUDE and Isabella GIBSON, and following reports from his brothers David and Robert managed to obtain an assisted immigrant journey for his wife Jane and their two young daughters, Ellenor Jane and Mary Ann.
They arrived on the barque "Viscount Canning" on the 21st January, 1865, after a tedious voyage of 124 days. Reference: White Wings Vol. II. John FROUDE married Jane Berry MILLER in about 1856 in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had three daughters.
Their eldest daughter, Eleanor Jane, was born about 1856 in Belfast. Eleanor was to marry a well known Auckland boat builder, George Pickering CARR (1854-1944) on the 12 Dec 1878 in Auckland. They had five children.
1. Helen Jane (Nellie) CARR born 1881 Auckland, who married Richard Henry PROWSE in Sydney in 1902.
2. Minnie Agnes CARR born 1882 in Auckland. No further information other than she was a teacher for many years in North Sydney.
3. George Anthony Froude CARR born 1885 in Auckland who married Winifred RICKARD

5. Rachel E CARR born in Petersham, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1897. She married Harold CUMBERBEACH in 1924.
John and Jane's second daughter, Mary Ann was born 10 Nov 1863 in Belfast. She married James CARLAW in 1881 in Auckland.
They had four children:
1. Ethel Ann CARLAW born 1882 Auckland who married Albert Edward WETHERILT in 1906.
2. John CARLAW born 1883 Auckland who married Eleanor Maria ATKIN in 1908.
3. Ivy Eileen CARLAW born 1886 Auckland who married John Erasmus FOSTER in 1910.
4. Rita Constance CARLAW born 1895 Auckland who married Rupert Geoffrey SLOMAN in 1917.
John and Jane's third daughter was Sarah FROUDE born 1866 in Auckland who married Richard WARD in 1888 in Auckland. They had three children.
1. Richard Froude WARD born 1891 Auckland who married Jessie Park BROWN in 1922.
2. James Desmond WARD born 1893 Auckland.
3. Ora Margaret WARD born 1894 Auckland and married Samuel McCord in 1924.
John FROUDE was a Tailor and died 8 May 1891 in Auckland. He is buried in the Waikumete Cemetery. Jane went to Australia after John died, and died in Sydney on 22 Mar 1903.
