Sarah FROUDE and James MONTGOMERY

The family of Sarah FROUDE and James MONTGOMERY are difficult to research having been located in Ireland. To date I have not found their marriage records.

Sarah FROUDE was born 23rd August 1832 and baptised on the 24th August 1832, which seems fairly quick. She was the fourth child and first daughter of Thomas FROUDE (1796-1888) and Isabella GIBSON.

She married James MONTGOMERY at an unknown date about 1825 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. James was born about 1841 in County Monaghan, Ireland. James's occupation in 1901 was "Boat Closer".

The following children have been identified:
1. Margaret Jane MONTGOMERY born 18 June 1869, Belfast. No further information.
2. Unknown MONTGOMERY born 12 January 1871, Belfast, possibly died young.
3. James MONTGOMERY was born 16 October 1873, Belfast. He was the only child living with his mother and father in 1901, when he was 27, and employed as a Hardware Assistant.
4. Isabella Froude MONTGOMERY was born 24 April 1875, in Belfast. No further information.
5. Sarah Jane Neill MONTGOMERY was born 21 May 1877 in Belfast. No further information.

In 1901 they, James Snr. and Sarah and James Jnr., are living at Dock Ward, Shankill Parish. They are in same house where Thomas FROUDE used to live. (56 Henry Street) A four room house with 5 windows in the front.

Thomas FROUDE and Isabella GIBSON

Thomas FROUDE was born on the 21st March 1796 at Dartmouth, Devon, England and christened 10th April 1796 at Dartmouth.

Dartmouth had long been valued for its deep water harbour. There's evidence of trading with Europe in Neolithic times and a settlement on the banks of the Dart even earlier. The harbour was well known in Europe. So when an invasion force of 13,000 English, Scots, Norman, German, Flemish and Frisian crusaders gathered for the Second Crusade in 1147, 164 ships assembled in Dartmouth. Later in that century, in 1190, 37 ships left Dartmouth to join Richard I, The Lionheart, on the Third Crusade.  Dartmouth Castle is shown below.

It was a home of the English navy since the reign of Edward III and was twice surprised and sacked during the Hundred Years' War, after which the mouth of the estuary was closed every night with a great chain. The narrow mouth of the Dart is protected by two fortified castles, Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle.  Kingswear Castle is in the foreground below with Dartmouth Castle across the other side of the Dartmouth Harbour entrance.

Ever since, Dartmouth has been a major naval port, so it is hardly surprising that Thomas FROUDE became a Master Mariner. It is hard to understand why anyone would leave such an idyllic town, but for Thomas the reason was Isabella GIBSON whom he met in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. The two were married in Belfast about 1825.

Seven children are known for this family.

  1. John FROUDE born about 1826 in Belfast, who married Jane Berry MILLER in about 1856 in Belfast, and then came to New Zealand. See here.
  2. Thomas FROUDE born July 1827 in Belfast and christened 25 July 1827. Thomas married Sarah McCAULEY in Belfast on the 18th February 1851. They moved to Salford, Lancashire, England in 1871. Their oldest son Robert moved to New Zealand. See here.
  3. David FROUDE born February 1830 in Belfast and christened at St Anne’s Parish Church, Belfast on the 17th February 1830. He married Margaret Jane AGNEW on the 3 November 1856 in Belfast. The family came to New Zealand. See here.
  4. Sarah FROUDE was born on the 23rd August 1832 in Belfast and christened 24th August 1832 at St Anne’s Parish Church. She married James MONTGOMERY in Belfast but the date is unknown.
  5. Jane FROUDE was born about 1836 in Belfast and married John NEILL in Belfast on the 14th May 1856.
  6. Robert FROUDE was born about 1837 in Belfast and moved to New Zealand where he married Priscilla WHITE in Auckland on the 15th October 1862. See here.
  7. Mary Ann Gibson FROUDE was born in Belfast about 1841 and married Samuel JORDAN in Belfast on the 23rd July 1862. See here.

The Origins Of The First Four FROUDE Families In New Zealand

All four families trace back to John FROUDE and Margaret BURGOIN who married 6 Jan 1774 at Cornworthy near Dartmouth, Devon. John is thought to have been born about 1750 and Margaret about 1751. Margaret was christened Margaret BURGOIN 24 September 1751 at Stoke Fleming, Devon. Sometimes the surname was spelt FRUDE or FRUID rather than FROUDE.

They had nine known children.
 1. Elizabeth FROUDE was born about 1774, christened 6 Mar 1774 Cornworthy, Devon and married William DODD on the 9th April 1802 at Dartmouth.
2. John FROUDE, born about 1775, christened 1776 at Cornworthy, and married Margaret ELEMS in Dartmouth on the 6th November 1810.
3. Samuel FROUDE was born about 1781 at Dartmouth. He was christened 3rd June 1781in Dartmouth.
4. Robert FROUDE born about 1784 and Christened on the 5th September 1784 in Dartmouth. He married Mary BARTLETT on the 6th. January 1807 in Dartmouth.
5. Margaret (Peggy ) FROUDE was born about 1786 and christened on the 3rd December 1786 in Dartmouth.
6. Mary Burgoyne FROUDE born about 1789 and christened on 4 October 1789 at Dartmouth. She married John BRIEN at Dartmouth on the 7 March 1816.
7. Sarah FROUDE born about 1792 and christened 27 May 1792 at Dartmouth.
8. Thomas FROUDE born 21 Mar 1796 at Dartmouth and christened 10th April 1796 at Dartmouth. He married Isabella Gibson about 1825 in Belfast
9. Jane Randell Burgoyne FROUDE was born 9th September 1798 at Dartmouth and was christened 9th September 1798 at Dartmouth. She married John PROBERT on the 31st May 1842 at St Pauls in Auckland. See here.

Now Thomas FROUDE became a Master Mariner and by 1825 had ended up living in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland, where he married Isabella GIBSON.  See here.

The Fourth FROUDE Family In New Zealand

Robert FROUDE and Sarah Ann DEAN
The Fourth FROUDE family to arrive in New Zealand was Robert FROUDE (1851 - 1937) and his wife, Sarah Ann DEAN (1852 - 1900).  Robert was the oldest son of Thomas FROUDE (1827 - 1920) and Sarah McCAULEY (About 1830 - 1919).  This Thomas was the brother  of David, Robert and John, who provided the first three FROUDE families in New Zealand. These three arrived in New Zealand in 1858, 1858, and 1865 respectively. So Robert would have been a young impressionable lad of seven or eight years old when the letters started arriving of this new life in a far away place. By the time Robert was 14 or 15, letters would have been arriving from all three families and from Grand Aunt Jane and her successful husband, John PROBERT.

Then in 1867 or 1868 sixteen year old Robert's (1851) uncle Robert (1837), and his wife Priscilla and two children, Emmeline Alice, and Edith Sarah, made a trip back to England, not returning to New Zealand until 1881, by then having had another seven children. They stayed while in England in the Salford, Manchester area. Young Robert's parents, Thomas and Sarah moved to Salford from Belfast sometime between 1 March 1870 when their youngest child Winifred was born in Belfast and the time of 1871 census (2/3 April 1871).

So finally on the 2nd November 1880 Robert departed London on the "Sydenham" to see for himself what this new land was like. He was on the same boat as his Uncle's family but may have worked his passage as he is not listed in the passengers. I first heard this story about 40 years ago. And it seemed "logical" that he would come out when they did.

For years I have believed this to be the case, but a doubt has arisen recently because of the date of birth of Lillian FROUDE whom I now know was born in Manchester on the 2nd November 1881. For a normal nine month pregnancy Robert would still have had to have been in England in February 1881.

The barque, Remington in later Years.
We do know however that Sarah Ann and the four oldest children sailed out to New Zealand on the "Remington". It departed London on 14th January 1882, and arrived in Auckland on the 2nd May 1882.

"This is the first time the Remington has visited Auckland and she has made a very fair passage of 105 days. She is an iron vessel of 999 tons register, and under charter to New Zealand Shipping Company, in command of Captain Nicholas." A passenger listing is here. It shows Sarah Ann and the four children but no Robert plus there is a small note further down about all being healthy.

Robert FROUDE and Sarah Ann had a further seven children before Sarah Ann died on 28 July 1900 from abdominal cancer and exhaustion! Her children at the time of her death were Sarah Dean (25), Annie (23), Isabella (21), Lillian (18), Winifred (16), James Anthony (14), Robert Dean (12), Evaline (10), Thomas Gilbert (9), Edith (7), and Hilda (5).

Robert then married 20 year old Janet Martin ANDERSON on the 24th August 1900. Together they had seven children, the youngest being born when Robert was 62.

These children were: Ethel (1901), Janet Forrester (Jen) (1904), David Anderson (1905), Henry (1907-1907), Esther Elizabeth (Bess) (1908), Margaret Jane (Madge) (1910), and Walter John Anderson FROUDE (1913).

None of Robert's (1851) brothers and sisters or parents came out to New Zealand. All continued to live in the Manchester area.

So Robert FROUDE and his two wives created a very large family of 18, 17 of whom lived to be adults. The fourth FROUDE family in New Zealand was thus the largest of the FROUDE families.

Janet Martin died on the 28th August 1920 just 40 years old. Robert married for a third time to Jessica Mary (Jessie) SHEPHERD (1873-1940). They were married on the 21st October 1924 at the Methodist Church, Sydenham, Christchurch. They moved back to Dunedin.

Robert FROUDE died on the 2nd July 1937 in St Kilda, Dunedin, aged 85.  Below is a photo of Robert FROUDE taken in 1924 when he was 72 years old.

The Third FROUDE Family in New Zealand

The Family of John FROUDE and Jane Berry MILLER

They were the third FROUDE family to arrive in New Zealand, David and Robert FROUDE being the heads of the first and second families. John was the oldest son of Thomas FROUDE and Isabella GIBSON, and following reports from his brothers David and Robert managed to obtain an assisted immigrant journey for his wife Jane and their two young daughters, Ellenor Jane and Mary Ann.

They arrived on the barque "Viscount Canning" on the 21st January, 1865, after a tedious voyage of 124 days. Reference: White Wings Vol. II. For some details of the voyage and a passenger list see here. For a newspaper list of passengers from the New Zealand Herald see here. A similar list in the Southern Cross is here.

A view of Auckland in the 1860's is shown below taken from Albert Park (George Grey Collection).

John FROUDE married Jane Berry MILLER in about 1856 in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland. They had three daughters.

Their eldest daughter, Eleanor Jane, was born about 1856 in Belfast. Eleanor was to marry a well known Auckland boat builder, George Pickering CARR (1854-1944) on the 12 Dec 1878 in Auckland. They had five children.

2. James Desmond WARD born 1893 Auckland.

3. Ora Margaret WARD born 1894 Auckland and married Samuel McCord in 1924.

John FROUDE was a Tailor and died 8 May 1891 in Auckland. He is buried in the Waikumete Cemetery. Jane went to Australia after John died, and died in Sydney on 22 Mar 1903.

The Second FROUDE Family In New Zealand

The second FROUDE family in New Zealand were Robert and Priscilla FROUDE and children, though they did go back to England between 1869 and 1881.

Robert FROUDE (1837-1923) arrived in New Zealand on the “Mary Ann” on 24th September 1858, having escorted his brother David’s wife and daughter out to New Zealand. He was single when he arrived but it was not long before he met Priscilla WHITE.

From the book, White Wings Vol I. Fifty Years Of  Sail In The New Zealand Trade, 1850 To 1900

Captain Ashby's first trip was in 1858 in the barque Mary Ann. Among the passengers on this occasion was Mr. Robert Froude, who in 1862 married Miss White, daughter of Mr. Henry White, who arrived at Auckland with his wife and family by the ship Westminster in 1842. During 1922 the happy couple celebrated their diamond jubilee at Howick. The following year, in March, 1923, at the ripe age of 85, Mr. Froude passed away. Mrs. Froude is now in her 84th year, and is still residing at Howick. Mr. Henry White the father of Mrs. Froude, assisted in the construction of Partington's old mill in Karangahape Road; also the old mill in Little Queen Street and the stone foundations of Pitt Street Methodist Church. The Mary Ann sailed from Auckland the same year for London, taking Home the officers and men of the 58th Regiment.
For information on Partington Mill, an Auckland landmark for 100 years, see here.
The picture below is of Queen Street in 1852, with the Mill on the Karangahape Road Ridge.

Southern Cross Newspaper 20th Oct 1862 Marriage Notice.

On 15th inst, at the Wesleyan Chapel, Hobson St., by Rev John WARREN, Robert FROUDE, late of Belfast to Priscilla, eldest daughter of Mr Henry WHITE, of Auckland.

Robert was 25 and Priscilla was 21 when they married, Robert having been born in Belfast in 1837 (the exact date not known) and Priscilla having been born in Heamoor, Madron, Cornwall, England on 19 July 1841.

Their first child was Emmeline Alice FROUDE, born 1864 in Auckland, who married Robert BYCROFT in 1893.

Their second child was Edith Sarah FROUDE, born in 1866 in Auckland and who died in 1870 in Salford, Lancashire, England. So it appears the family made a trip back to England and visited his brother Thomas FROUDE (1827-1920), who lived with his wife Sarah (MCCAULEY) in Salford.

It was there in 1869 that Robert Henry the third child and first boy was born. He was the only son to reach adulthood and married Mary Jane LAVER in 1891.

Their fourth child was Alfred who was born and died in 1870 at Salford.

Their fifth child, Helena FROUDE also died young, being born in 1873 at Salford and died of bronchitis on 21 March 1874.

Their sixth child was Mabel Priscilla FROUDE born in 1874 at Salford who married George NEWELL in 1899 in Auckland.

Their seventh child was Lizzie White FROUDE born in 1876 in Salford who married Thomas McGREGGOR

Their eighth child was Mildred FROUDE born in 1878 in Salford who became a Nurse and didn’t marry.

Their ninth child was Ethel Mary FROUDE born in 1879 in Salford and who also did not marry.

By 1881 when Jessie Probert FROUDE was born they were back in Auckland. Jessie was also a Nurse and she did not marry.

Their eleventh child was Hilda May FROUDE born in 1886 in Auckland and went on to marry John ARMITAGE in 1913. I am not aware of any children for this couple.
Both the Westminster and Claudine ran aground in Walpole Bay in November 1840. They were repaired and refloated and continued service for the English East India Company, the Westminster then bringing Priscilla out to New Zealand in 1842. The Westminster is on the left.

The First FROUDE Family in New Zealand

The First FROUDE family in New Zealand were David FROUDE (1830-1912) and his wife, Margaret  (1839 - 1873) nee AGNEW, and their daughter,  Margaret Jane, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, about 1857, who arrived here on the "Mary Ann" on the 24th September 1858. They were accompanied by Robert FROUDE, David’s brother. The ship left Gravesend, London on the 31st May 1858, carrying 117 passengers.

The "Mary Ann" was constructed in 1835 at Yarmouth, Norfolk. The 723 ton ship had been used to carry troops during the Crimean War (1853 - 1856).

David is not listed amongst the passengers. He came out on an earlier ship, the “Tamar”.

ARRIVAL OF THE TAMAR

The New Zealander January 30th 1858

The barque Tamar, with Captain J ROSS, which arrived in harbour on Thursday at 4 a.m., has made a better passage than any of the last three or four English ships preceding her, having accomplished the run from Gravesend, whence she took her departure on 11 October, in 108 days.

David will have sent mail back to Margaret. Mail in those days took 3 or 4 months to get to England from New Zealand.

Isabella Gibson FROUDE, the couple's second child, was born on the 27 June 1859 in Auckland, nine months after the arrival of Margaret in Auckland. See here.

David and Margaret had married on the 3rd November 1856 in Belfast.

This picture is not of the "Mary Ann" but just a general picture which indicates what it was like on the sailing ships. I have been unable to find a picture of the "Mary Ann".

Next to arrive in the family was Lillian (Lilly) FROUDE who was born 26 Dec 1862 in Auckland. She later moved to Australia.

Then followed  a David FROUDE and a Louisa FROUDE both of whom died as babies.

Then came James Candlett FROUDE born 15 Jan 1866 in Auckland. He also moved to Australia

Alice Emmeline FROUDE was born in Auckland on the 20 February 1867.

In 1869 there was an un-named girl who died at or near birth.

In 1871 Ezekiel Burgoyne FROUDE was born in Auckland, the Burgoyne name probably coming in recognition of Jane Randell Burgoyne FROUDE, David's Aunt who arrived in New Zealand in 1840.

Finally Edith Mary FROUDE completed the family being born on the 1st March 1873 in Auckland. Tragically her mother Margaret died the same day.

At this stage the family consisted of 5 girls and 2 boys, with the oldest girl, Margaret, now 16. It must of been a case of the older girls having to look after their father and the younger children, until Jane Margaret arrived in the family.

David was to marry Jane Margaret HARDING (1836 - 1895) on the 25 April 1877 at the Wesleyan Church at Onehunga.

As far as my research tells me these are the only FROUDEs who came to and lived in New Zealand before 1900.

In addition there was a visit to New Zealand by the famous Historian, James Anthony FROUDE, who arrived here on the 3rd March 1885. See here.

David FROUDE's wife, Margaret Jane (nee AGNEW) and daughter Margaret Jane FROUDE appear to have come out to New Zealand accompanied by David's brother, Robert.

John (1830), Robert (1837) and David (1830) FROUDE are brothers and nephews of Jane FROUDE and possibly it were her letters back to the family that inspired them to set off for New Zealand.

Robert FROUDE (1851), was a nephew of John, David and Robert, being the son of their brother, Thomas (1827). Robert's (1851) wife, Sarah Ann DEAN came out with their four youngest daughters on a separate voyage to Robert. Robert arrived in New Zealand on the 21 March 1881, and sent word back for the family to come out. Sarah Ann and children departed from London on January 14 1882 and arrived in Auckland on the 1st May 1882. It must have been quite a task for Sarah, getting all the children from the Manchester area, where they lived, across to London to catch the voyage of the Remington. Then there was the long voyage coping with children who were six, four and two years old together with baby Lillian, and no husband to help her.

The picture below shows the "Remington" photographed several years after their voyage, and by this time owned by a Norwegian company.

The First FROUDE To Marry In New Zealand

St Pauls Church drawn by Edward AINSWORTH 1843

Jane Randell Burgoyne FROUDE married John PROBERT on the 31 May 1842 at St Pauls Church in Auckland.

Auckland is a huge city these days but in 1842 there were only 2,000 inhabitants. Though few in number they were determined to have a place to worship. So on a site at the end of Princes Street, Governor HOBSON laid the foundation stone for St Pauls on the 28th. July 1841.

On 27th October 1841, Bishop Selwyn was consecrated first Bishop of New Zealand, and an impetus was given to the work by funds raised by him in England, and his subsequent arrival in the colony on the 30th May, 1842.  So it seems likely Bishop Selwyn was at the marriage ceremony of John and Jane held on 31st May 1842.

St. Paul’s, when the troops were here, was always the garrison church, and it was where every Governor of the colony when in Auckland has worshipped. During the Northern Maori War, the church was strengthened and barricaded as a refuge for the women and children when the natives threatened the town.

This painting by William FOX in 1849 of Auckland shows the spire of St Pauls in the middle left and graphically illustrates the smallness of the settlement in the early days.
As mentioned previously Jane came out in 1840 as Nanny to Governor Hobson's children. See here.

Jane was born on the 9th September 1798 in Dartmouth, Devon, England and so was 43 when she married John PROBERT. John was 26. The couple had no issue.

John PROBERT arrived in New Zealand in 1840 also. I've yet to find what he did prior to coming to New Zealand. He was born in Salford, Manchester, Lancashire, England on the 5th December 1815. The following details are taken from his substantial headstone at St Andrews in Epsom, Auckland.

John PROBERT
who died 25 July 1890 aged 75 years
"Born in Machester, England and came to this colony in 1840. He bequeathed a portion of his means to his relatives, the Auckland YMCA, Wesleyan New Guinea and Home Missions and the residue to endow a Wesleyan Theological college in the Auckland district.

He was an unostentatious and exemplary christian and died in perfect peace and the faith of the gospel."

Sacred also to the memory of his wife Jane Randell Burgoyne Froude who departed this life 2 Nov 1893 aged 95 years

"I will both lay me down in peace and sleep"

According to the National Probate Calendar in England his personal estate was 920 pounds. He left 100 pounds to his brother, some must have gone to pay for the headstone and the rest went to other relatives and the Wesleyan church. His brother William Gadsby PROBERT was so upset that he didn't receive more he committed suicide, according to a newspaper report.

However also see this newspaper report written by the Trustees of John PROBERT's will, which indicates John PROBERT was actually very generous to both William and all the relatives and his estate was much larger. Possibly the 900 pounds was just his estate left in England.
